The Opera will be staged with a new production directed by Renzo Giacchieri. Tamar Iveri will play the role of Minnie; Maestro Gianna Fratta will conduct the Puccini Festival Orchestra. Direction, Scenes, Costumes by Renzo Giacchieri.
At the beginning of 1907, during a stay in the American metropolis, Puccini happened to witness a drama by David Belasco, entitled The Girl of the Golden West, remaining extremely impressed; having obtained the necessary consent from the author, he commissioned the poet Carlo Zangarini, who later took over the Tuscan writer Guelfo Civinini, from writing the librettist text. In the summer of 1908 Puccini embarked on the composition which, after a rather long period for family reasons, was completed in July 1910. The first performance took place successfully at the Metropolitan Theater in New York on December 10, 1910 directed by Arturo Toscanini and until 2011 it had 104 performances.
The story takes place in California, around 1850, at the time of the gold rush. Minnie (soprano) is the young mistress of the "Polka", a place at the foot of the Sierra mountains, and, for the miners of the nearby work camp, the companion, the comforter, the confidant; especially now that a band of greasers, commanded by the fearsome Ramerrez, haunts the area by plundering and plunging.
