After the International Jazz Festival in the month of April, May begins and is all dedicated to music.
Many events of all kinds are scheduled and are the right occasion to visit places related to music in Lucca, first of all, the Puccini Museum where adults and children can learn more about one of the most famous composers in the world. His operas are on stage every day in different corners of the world, like La Boheme and Tosca, which are listed between the five most performed ones ever. In Puccini's house of Corte San Lorenzo, in these days, there will be the opportunity to take part in costume workshops, guided tours, activities for adults and children.
Also at the Giglio theater special guided tours are organized, as a short journey through the artistic history of one of the oldest public theaters in Italy that hosted the most famous names of Italian melodrama over the centuries. Giacomo Puccini loved to supervise the work of staging of some of his operas in the small theater of his hometown.
The rooms of Palazzo Ducale, where once receptions and court dances used to take place, are filled with the sound of music and words by young musicians playing in concerts, by lectures about the history of music, and meetings with great personalities including maestro Salvatore Accardo. From the monumental Scala Regia it is possible to access the magnificent Parata district, with Sala dei Camerieri, Sala degli Staffieri and Galleria Ammannati to reach the sumptuous Sala delle Guardie frescoed by Luigi Ademollo with scenes from the life of Trajan, where concerts and conferences are held. Not far from this room, the small theater of Princess Elisa and the permanent exhibition "The nose and history" - a small "olfactory" tale of the palace at the time of Napoleon - complete the sensory experience.
"Follow the quartet" is a guided tour in the locations related to music in Lucca, constantly accompanied by a string quartet.
The Lucca Classica Music Festival takes the audience to unusual music places (if there are any in Lucca). Music and words invade the town with many great music events.
At Palazzo Orsetti concerts are held, where visitors are the guests of the mayor of Lucca, guide for one day, as well as in the Basilica of San Frediano, in the 18th century garden of Palazzo Pfanner and at the Ilaria del Carretto's sepulchre, in the cathedral.
And of course in the streets of town center there are itinerant concerts of the Lucca Classica Music Brass Band, the band of Segromigno, the Filarmonica group Gaetano Luporini of S.Gennaro, the Giacomo Puccini band of Nozzano Castello and and the Stereo Tipi.
Happy coincidence, in these days in Lucca there is the wine event Anteprima vini della Costa where music accompanies aperitif time with the best wines and flavors of the Tuscan coast.
Other music events are organized in the whole month of May. The Easter and Pentecost Festival celebrates its twentieth edition with free concerts in historic music places of Lucca. The programme of concerts, conferences, seminars, OPEN of the Boccherini Music Institute continues at the Suffragio auditorium.
18th century music in Lucca, the period of the local composer Boccherini, is focused by the concert series Il '700 musicale a Lucca, and by the meetings La pittura che suona, combining music and art in the last dates held in the San Frediano Basilica and at the Boccherini Institute, on the town walls.
Four events of contemporary opera are organized in the permanent Puccini Chamber Opera Festival with brand new compositions of young international artists in the Youth Orchestra Festival, and the International Choir Festival.
May is also the month of the traditional Sagra musicale Lucchese and the concert season of the Orchestra filarmonica di Lucca.
