FAQ - How and Why to Visit Lucca
Most of the historic center of Lucca is a ZTL zone, access is only possible, if necessary, with the relevant permit to be requested from the company LuccaPlus
Parking in the immediate vicinity of the Walls is paid or requires a parking disc, except for the parking lots in Piazzale Don Baroni (north), the Tagliate parking lot (north) and the Macelli parking lot (east) which are free.

Reaching the historic centre of Lucca from the train station is very simple, the Lucca train station is located near the historic centre (southern area), approximately 200m from the walls and approximately 350m from the entrance gate of Porta San Pietro.
The bus terminal is located in Piazzale Verdi, within the historic center, near Porta Vittorio Emanuele (northwest). The Lucca City Information Point is located in the square.
Lucca's Renaissance walls are the symbol of the city, a wall entirely walkable and freely accessible to all.
The current walkway at the summit is the result of a 19th-century renovation that modified its section and arranged the trees in regular avenues above the curtain walls and in the form of gardens on the bastions.
The tree-lined avenues above the curtain walls and the bastion gardens can be accessed by entering through one of the access gates and using the numerous stairways and ramps located along the entire internal perimeter.
However, for safety reasons, it is not possible to climb onto the grassy hills that border the avenues of the curtain walls and the bastions.
Most of Lucca's historic center is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL), so it's highly recommended to get around on foot or, as many Lucca residents do, by bicycle.
The historic centre is crossed by the LAM urban line (1+, 2+, 3+).

Lucca's historic center is enclosed within its Renaissance walls. It can be accessed through six city gates: Porta San Pietro (south, near the train station), Porta Santa Maria (north), Porta San Donato Nuova (northwest), Porta San Jacopo (northeast), Porta Elisa (east), and Porta Vittorio Emanuele (west).
On foot, you can use the ramparts' exits, entering the city through these narrow passages that are an integral part of the military structure and were once used only by the military.

From Lucca you can reach the Cinque Terre by train or car.
The most recommended means of transport is the train: From Lucca railway station, depart towards Viareggio. In Viareggio, change trains towards La Spezia.
Once you arrive in La Spezia you can reach the Cinque Terre by train or by sea.
By land, to 5 Terre Card It allows you to travel unlimitedly by train for 1, 2 or 3 days between the stations of the Cinque Terre villages.
By sea at the port there is a ferry service which connects the city to the gulf towns (during the summer it is also possible to use this service from the pier of the port of Viareggio:
If you want to travel by car, we recommend stopping in La Spezia and then reaching the Cinque Terre by sea or train.
