Accessible Lucca

Information and itineraries for a welcoming city

A glimpse of Via Fillungo with people, historic and new shops.

Lucca is a welcoming city, designed to be enjoyed by all. A commitment to accessibility is an integral part of its urban and cultural design: safe and dedicated routes, targeted interventions, and inclusive solutions make the city increasingly accessible to people with motor, sensory, or cognitive disabilities.

Accessible itineraries have been created in the historic center, allowing anyone to navigate independently and safely enjoy the beauty of the artistic and architectural heritage. Where sidewalks or natural architectural features that can serve as guides are lacking, tactile footpaths (LOGES systems) have been installed. These use internationally recognized raised signs to indicate changes in direction, pedestrian crossings, dangerous areas, and access to public buildings.

Among the most significant examples, the Lucca Botanical Garden offers a truly inclusive sensory experience. The garden is designed to be explored with all the senses: tactile panels and olfactory trails invite visitors to touch, smell, listen, and learn about the trees and plants, even those who cannot see. The paths are laid on stable surfaces to allow easy access, even for those in wheelchairs or with walking aids.

Accessibility is not just a technical objective, but a cultural value: all the itineraries have been designed with the contribution of associations that work with people with disabilities, to ensure an authentic, barrier-free experience that respects the diverse needs of each visitor.
