Parish Church of Santo Stefano

The parish church of Santo Stefano, in the town of the same name, a few kilometers from the historic center of Lucca, stands out from its panoramic position, overlooking the green hills of the surrounding countryside, dotted with rolling vineyards, olive groves, and woods.

The church has a medieval structure that probably dates back to the late 12th century or early 13th century. From this period, the apse with three single-lancet windows and part of the left side remain.

Today the church is very different from its original appearance; the large portico in front of the façade was added in the 16th century, and the interior was completely redesigned at the end of the 18th century.

Once inside, one work in particular deserves a little attention: the 19th-century copy, made by Michele Ridolfi, of one of the most beautiful paintings by the Renaissance painter Zacchia, the altarpiece with the Madonna between Saints Roch and Sebastian.
For music and musical instrument lovers, the church also houses a late 16th-century organ by Onofrio Zeffirini.
