Sanctuary of Santa Gemma

The sanctuary and monastery dedicated to Saint Gemma Galgani is located just outside the walls of Lucca, in the immediate vicinity of the historic center: it is here that the saint, who died of tuberculosis on April 11, 1903, is buried and still today houses the community of Passionist Sisters.

The building underwent several expansions starting in 1903, carried out by architect Italo Baccelli, who, inspired by the Berlin Cathedral, defined the new style of the dome and bell tower. Work was interrupted during the Second World War and was completed in 1965 with the construction of the dome (designed by Adriano Marabini).
