A fragment of the Apuan Alps, Monte Pisano is one of the oldest geological formations in Tuscany.

The relief is all that remains of an ancient territory that included the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, Corsica, and Sardinia, sharing a fascinating geological history and lush vegetation. A small island between the plains of Lucca and Pisa, it reaches almost 1000 meters in elevation. Its two sides, with different exposures—toward the coast and inland—present distinct faces, albeit with common features.

The Pisan side, sunny and exposed to the direct action of sea winds, is dry and arid, sometimes arid. The Lucca side, collecting rainfall from inland Tuscany, is cool and rich in healing spring waters. Its history, its nature, its caves inhabited since prehistoric times—a refuge for saints and hermits and a paradise for speleologists—the aqueducts from two different eras that collect and convey water to nearby Pisa and Lucca, the monasteries, places of refuge and prayer for hermits and monks, the sumptuous villas used by the Pisan bourgeoisie to restore body and soul, and the local products, first and foremost the EVO oil still produced using traditional methods, make it an intriguing destination where new, small, and great discoveries await, along with splendid natural and human landscapes.
