HOLIDAY STORIES AND TREASURES

Lucca invites you to its parlours and alleys in 12 appointments with its history, secrets and curiosities during this holiday season.

The idea is to do it all together, both residents and guests, so as to share the beauty of the city during this festive period, in the magical atmosphere of the end of the year, even in English.

6 titles, from December 8, 2023 to January 7, 2024, dedicated to places and monuments, characters, stories and traditions of the city, from the most well known and appreciated worldwide to the most hidden and less known,  true gems to be discovered.

The appointments:

 

On and under the Walls

The traditional and beloved walk along the Walls of Lucca and inside of the great brick-vaulted bastions, where history and ingenuity are hidden.
December  8 at 3:00 p.m. and

Music Maestros!

The lives, works, successes, but also failures, of the four famous composers and musicians from Lucca: Giacomo Puccini, Luigi Boccherini, Francesco Geminiani and Alfredo Catalani.

Beyond history and legend
An opportunity to discover, with a different look, the less known corners of the city as well as the better known ones, thanks to the telling of stories, legends, curious facts, enigmatic places, characters, traditions and recipes of Lucca.

Lucca, crossroad of Paths
Let's retrace together the path of yesterday's and today's pilgrims on their way to Rome through the historical and religious routes that cross the city, such as Via Francigena and Via Matildica del Volto Santo (the Holy Face), with entrance to the Church of San Michele (St. Michael's) and the Cathedral of San Martino (St. Martin's) - guests of the Cathedral Museum complex -.

Christmas in showcase
A tour through the streets of the historical center among the traditional small stores and establishments, discovering the secrets of typical Lucca's productions as well as the Art Nouveau signs of places once attended by illustrious musicians, poets and artists, with a look at the most beautiful Christmas windows.

3 churches and 3 nativity scenes
In the heart of Lucca three special places in a special guise.
The Baroque Church of Santa Maria (St. Mary's) Corteorlandini and its sumptuous 17th century nativity scene with large statues wearing the silk robes of Lucca' s factories of the time. The Church of San Salvatore (St. Saviour's) with its artistic traditional nativity scene and the Church of San Benedetto (St. Benedict's) in Gottella with its nativity scene, entirely made of wood by the expert hands of the Confraternita dei Legnaioli.

The tours are led in collaboration with the tour guide associations Lucca Info&Guide, La Giunchiglia and Turislucca, will last about one hour and half or two hours; are free of charge, limited in number and reservations are required.
