The wizard impresario of a ballet company helps two of his young protégés, a composer and a dancer, to achieve success with the ballet Red Shoes, inspired by Andersen's fable. The two get married and she promises to give up dancing, but she cannot resist and, against her husband's wishes, goes back to dancing. To the scene that follows the young woman answers with suicide.
